Wellness ServicesBodyScan Body Composition Analysis

Understand what your weight cannot tell you. In about 30 seconds, a BodyScan shows how much of your body is muscle, how much is body fat, and whether your efforts are producing meaningful changes.

Understand what your weight cannot tell you

Your weight is only one number. It cannot show how much of your body is muscle, how much is body fat, where that fat is distributed, or whether your fitness and wellness efforts are producing meaningful changes.

The Magnolia Health & Wellness BodyScan provides a detailed body composition analysis in approximately 30 seconds. Using the advanced InBody 380 analyzer, we can measure body fat, skeletal muscle, lean mass, body water, visceral fat, basal metabolic rate, and other valuable fitness and wellness metrics.

Whether you are working to lose body fat, build muscle, improve athletic performance, or establish a healthier baseline, a BodyScan gives you objective information you can use to make more informed decisions. Many patients pair it with medically supervised weight loss or a wellness consultation.

Curious where you actually stand right now? A BodyScan takes about 30 seconds and gives you a clear baseline to build from.

What is a BodyScan?

A BodyScan is a quick, noninvasive body composition test performed with the InBody 380 Body Composition Analyzer.

During the scan, you stand barefoot on the analyzer and hold two hand electrodes. The system uses bioelectrical impedance analysis to measure how a very low-level electrical current travels through different types of body tissue.

Because muscle, fat, and body water conduct electricity differently, the system can estimate several aspects of your body composition that a bathroom scale cannot measure.

The scan takes approximately 30 seconds and produces a detailed results report that can be reviewed with your Magnolia Health & Wellness provider.

Why get a body composition scan?

01

Look beyond body weight and BMI

Two people can have the same height and weight but very different amounts of muscle and body fat. Body mass index, or BMI, does not distinguish between muscle, fat, bone, and water.

A BodyScan provides a clearer picture by separating your weight into meaningful components.

02

Establish an accurate starting point

Before beginning a new weight-loss, nutrition, exercise, or wellness program, it helps to know where you are starting.

Your initial scan creates a baseline for comparing future results. Instead of relying only on appearance, clothing size, or scale weight, you can monitor specific changes in muscle mass, body fat, visceral fat, and other measurements.

03

Track fat loss without overlooking muscle

Losing weight and losing body fat are not always the same thing. During weight loss, the goal is generally to reduce body fat while preserving as much lean muscle as possible.

A standard scale cannot show whether a change in weight came from fat, muscle, or body water. BodyScan results help provide that distinction so your progress can be evaluated more completely.

04

Measure muscle development

If you are strength training, returning to exercise, or working toward improved athletic performance, scale weight may remain stable even while your body is changing.

An InBody scan measures skeletal muscle mass and lean mass throughout the body. This can help you see progress that might otherwise go unnoticed.

05

Identify muscle and fat distribution

The InBody 380 performs segmental analysis of the arms, legs, and trunk, so you can see how lean mass and body fat are distributed across different areas of your body.

Athletes and active adults may find this information especially useful when monitoring balance, training progress, and differences between the left and right sides of the body.

06

Monitor visceral fat

Visceral fat is the fat stored deeper within the abdominal area around the internal organs. It is different from the fat that can be seen or felt just beneath the skin.

Your BodyScan includes a visceral fat level measurement, providing another useful indicator to discuss as part of your overall wellness plan.

07

Follow your progress over time

One scan provides a snapshot. A series of scans performed under similar conditions can reveal a trend.

By comparing results over time, you can see whether your current exercise, nutrition, weight-management, or wellness plan is moving you toward your goals.

What does a BodyScan measure?

Your BodyScan report may include the following measurements and analyses.

Body composition analysis

This section breaks your body weight into several components, including total body water, intracellular water, extracellular water, dry lean mass, fat-free mass, body fat mass, and total body weight.

Muscle and fat analysis

This analysis compares body weight, skeletal muscle mass, and body fat mass. It provides a clearer picture of whether your body weight is primarily influenced by muscle, fat, or a combination of both.

Percent body fat

Percent body fat shows the percentage of your total body weight that consists of fat. Unlike BMI, it accounts for differences in muscle mass, which makes it more useful for athletes, strength-training clients, and people working to improve body composition.

Segmental lean analysis

Lean mass is estimated in five areas: right arm, left arm, trunk, right leg, and left leg. This helps show how muscle and other lean tissue are distributed throughout your body.

Segmental fat analysis

Body fat is estimated in the arms, legs, and trunk, which can help you monitor how fat distribution changes as you progress through a fitness or weight-management program.

Visceral fat level

The report includes an estimate of visceral fat stored within the abdominal area. Monitoring this measurement over time can provide useful context for your broader health and wellness goals.

Basal metabolic rate

Basal metabolic rate, or BMR, estimates the number of calories your body uses each day to support basic functions while at rest. It offers a helpful starting point when discussing calorie needs, nutrition, weight management, and fitness goals, alongside your activity level and health history.

Body water analysis

The InBody 380 evaluates total body water and the relationship between extracellular and intracellular water. Hydration, recent exercise, food intake, and other factors influence these numbers, so scans performed under similar conditions give the most meaningful comparisons.

Whole-body phase angle

Phase angle is an additional measurement related to cell membranes and body water distribution. It provides useful context when interpreted alongside the rest of your results, and it should not be used by itself to diagnose a health condition.

Body composition history

When scans are performed periodically, your report can track changes in weight, skeletal muscle mass, percent body fat, body fat mass, fat-free mass, visceral fat level, basal metabolic rate, body mass index, body-water balance, and InBody Score. This makes it easier to focus on long-term progress instead of normal day-to-day fluctuations.

Who can benefit from a BodyScan?

Body composition testing can be helpful for many different goals and activity levels.

Athletes

Competitive and recreational athletes can monitor muscle development, body fat, segmental balance, hydration-related measurements, and changes across training cycles.

Weekend warriors

You do not have to be a professional athlete to benefit from better information. If you lift weights, run, cycle, play recreational sports, or train several days per week, a BodyScan shows how your body is responding.

People working to lose body fat

If your goal is to become leaner, the scale may not tell the entire story. Body composition testing helps distinguish changes in body fat from changes in lean mass and body water.

People working to build muscle

Muscle gain can offset fat loss on the scale. A BodyScan may show that your body composition is improving even when your total weight has changed very little.

Adults beginning a new wellness program

A baseline scan helps you set realistic goals before starting a nutrition, fitness, weight-management, hormone-health, or general wellness program.

Anyone frustrated by the scale

If your clothes fit better, your strength is improving, or you feel healthier but the scale is not moving, your body composition may still be changing. A BodyScan can help uncover progress that weight alone cannot show.

Preparing for your scan, and how often to repeat it

For the most useful comparisons, future scans should be performed under similar conditions whenever possible. Hydration, meals, exercise, alcohol, and time of day may affect bioelectrical impedance measurements. Magnolia Health & Wellness will provide preparation instructions before your appointment.

The right testing schedule depends on your goals and how quickly meaningful changes are expected. Scanning too frequently may place too much attention on normal fluctuations in water and body weight, while periodic testing provides more useful information about longer-term trends.

Your Magnolia Health & Wellness provider can recommend an appropriate schedule based on your fitness, body-composition, or weight-management goals.

Common BodyScan Questions

The actual InBody 380 measurement takes approximately 30 seconds. Additional time may be needed to review and discuss your results.

No. A standard scale measures total weight. A BodyScan estimates how that weight is divided among muscle, body fat, lean mass, and body water.
